The objective of the industry-wide YESS initiative is to create a due diligence system that will assist yarn spinning mills identify, address, and eliminate forced labor in their cotton sourcing and within the spinning facilities.
Inspired by the ICT sector’s approach to verifying smelters as “conflict-free,” with the ambition to move sourcing away from cotton harvested or yarn produced with forced labor. YESS will combine a mass balance traceability approach with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains in the Garment and Footwear Sector, which aims to help enterprises identify, mitigate, and account for how they address the actual and potential adverse impacts in their supply chains. YESS will also partner with initiatives and auditing firms to train and verify spinning mills on social and labor rights within their own facilities.
The YESS initiative will identify and engage yarn and textile mills processing conventional and sustainable cotton, train them on due diligence expectations, and verify that they are implementing a due diligence system to address slave labor in cotton sourcing and yarn/textile production. One of the end results will be a global list of verified yarn spinners and vertically-integrated textile mills.
